- Played tight end and defensive end for coach Brad Dingess at Spring Valley High
- Member of the Class AAA All-State team
- Helped the Timberwolves to a 9-3 season and a trip to the state quarterfinals
- As a senior, he compiled 25 catches for 487 yards and four scores with a long of 57 yards
- Also played on the defensive line and accounted for 49 tackles, including 27 solo stops and seven tackles for loss
- In a shortened junior season, he turned in 18 receptions for 440 yards and 11 touchdowns
- His defensive numbers as a junior showed 37 tackles, 3½ sacks and one fumble recovery
